Breed Origins
French Bulldogs bloodline can be traced back to the 1800's. Bulldogs were the result of breeding between English Bulldogs and the local Terrier Rat Dogs. French Bulldogs gained their popularity as work dogs believe or not. They accompanied women to lace factories where they could be found sitting on their laps. French Bulldogs would help them stay warm during the long hours of work in the cold environment. Many of the factory workers left Birmingham seeking better opportunities in France. When they left England they took their French Bulldog best friends with them. It is in France where they bred French Bulldogs to take on many of the characteristics we see and love in French Bulldogs today.
General Breed Information
Frenchies are one of the best breeds of dogs for a family. French bulldogs are puppies for life. There are very few breeds that will maintain a puppy like spirit throughout their entire lifetime. French Bulldogs are not really known for barking unless necessary. They come in a wide array of colors including but not limited to: Brindle, white, fawn, cream, pie-bald, and black brindle. There is a gray (blue) Frenchies but it is important to note that they are more prone to skin and health problems. It is also important to note that French Bulldogs have difficulties with birth due to the size of their head as well as shoulders. Their weight of an adult French Bulldog is typically 16 to 29 pounds. French Bulldogs have trouble regulating their body temperature. If they get too hot or too cold it can cause upper respiratory illness. Therefore, you can put your Frenchie in pajamas at night and a sweater if it is cool during the day. They can only go outside in the heat for short periods of time. This is due to the fact that French Bulldogs have a flat face so they have to labor more to breathe. Their flat face is one of the reasons they are more prone to upper respiratory issues. Other than that they are a healthy, sturdy, happy, kid loving puppy. Additionally, they do very well with other animals and are not an aggressive breed. They are companion dogs and need to be around people. They really know the meaning of being your best friend. Like most best friends, they can still be stubborn from time to time.
